Police Judo Association, Canada:

Police Judo was originally developed at the Vancouver Police Department through Ret. Insp. Tim Laidler in the early 1990s. The VPD Police Judo Club was managed by civilian Head Coach Brian Shipper , and provided training for hundreds of recruits, applicants, and sworn police officers while running out of the gym at 312 Main St. Police Station four times a week for the past fifteen years.

Police Judo was introduced in the Fall of 2010 as a recreational program at Simon Fraser University and applies the standing and ground elements of traditional Judo while incorporating  control tactics best suited to street-level policing.  Many of our students practice Police Judo with the aim of moving into a policing career, many police officers practice to stay sharp for their current job in law enforcement, while others simply want to improve their fitness and learn practical self-defence skills. Police Judo is currently the largest recreational martial art program at SFU.

Our black belt instructors bring a varying degree of experience from a street-based policing background.
